Helping in the Community
From: Darcy Heyd
Sent: Monday, March 01, 2010
To: Johnson, Rick, Councillor
Subject: Thank You!
Rick Johnson,
Thank you very much for your generous donations towards Liam
Thompson's, Graham Klammer's, and my trip to Europe. I am
thoroughly excited to be going on this amazing and historical
trip and your contributions are extremely appreciated. So far
I am up to $1300.00 and working hard to raise the rest of the
$4000.00, so every bit counts! Thank you so much for the
$1500.00 you donated for the three of us.
Sincerely,
Darcy Heyd

Benefit for Claremont General Store
November 14, 2009
SNAP PICKERING December 2009
Owner of the Claremont General Store, Daniel
Park couldn't help but smile last month at the Claremont Community Centre
Fundraising dance in his honour. Daniel was visibly touched by the huge
turnout of people that gathered in his honour to help raise money to rebuild
his general store that burned down last July. The Claremont General Store,
built in 1847 went up in flames over the summer, leaving Daniel without a
business. The residents of Claremont have rallied together to help Daniel
rebuild. Councillor Rick Johnson has been one of the many leaders in this
cause and his band was out (Rick Johnson and the County Band) for the
evening to entertain the crowd. Two hundred tickets were sold for the event
and over $10,000 was raised.
UPDATE: Since the event, Rick has continued to fundraise and
the official number as of December 1, 2009 is now over $16,000 |

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

12th Annual
Durham Children's
Groundwater Festival
September 28th to October 2nd, 2009
9:45 am – 1:30 pm at Camp Samac, Oshawa
Rick, who as the CLOCA Chairman founded the Groundwater Festival in 1998, is very proud of the festival and how it has grown.
Launched as part of the Central Lake Ontario
Conservation Authority's (CLOCA) 40th anniversary
theme of water quality in 1998, the goal of the Durham
Children's Groundwater Festival is to increase awareness of
grade 4 students concerning water issues, motivating them to
become water stewards in their home, classroom and community.
The festival includes 40 hands-on interactive activity centres
with messages relevant to the student's everyday lives, water
conservation and protection. Through the activity centres,
they discover the importance of water, and how their actions
affect the watershed in which they live.

The
Brougham Central Hotel Restoration Project
Current Major Event at the Pickering Village Museum |
 |
| The Pickering Museum Village (PMV) Foundation's current partnership
project is the preservation and conservation of the Brougham Central
Hotel (BCH).
The restoration of the BCH to its status as an 1850s temperance
hotel will provide an opportunity for educational programmes on the
development of alcohol legislation in Ontario and will display
architectural and construction techniques of the 19"' century. Over
the years, many structural changes have taken place to the
buildings, and "windows to the past" will become an interpretation
feature. |
